Mark Rowden

Mark Rowden is a Sydney based artist who has been practicing for over fifteen years. He has completed fine arts studies both in Australia and the UK. For the past ten years he has been a Master Printer, editioning for many well known Australian artists.

Mark’s work portrays images from his everyday life, and so gains inspiration from a myriad of sources. His favourite and most influential artists include Alfred Sisley, Casper David Fredrick and Anselm Kiefer.

Mark's style was originally highly influenced by film noir, containing a strong sense of ‘chiaroscuro,’ the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, however he has gradually let a little more light and a little more colour into his works. His subject matter varies, from animals and portraiture to landscapes;

“When making my work I like some of the background and foreground to join, flattening out the planes."

Mark creates his work using traditional materials, he mainly works with lino and Japanese ash as carving blocks, relief ink, cotton paper and watercolours.

Mark is currently working as an Art Teacher and Master Printer. He is also an Arts Blogger and runs a Children’s Art Site, as well as being a stay at home dad!
