On Thursday night we (literally!) rolled out the red carpet for a buzzing crowd of art lovers, advertising heavyweights, and everyone in between to celebrate our newest exhibition at V∆ND∆L Gallery! After the launch of our first permanent, physical gallery space last month we were very excited to welcome Sydney-based artist Alun Rhys Jones presenting his new exhibition, entitled ICON.

With this exhibition Alun continues his exploration of identity, commodity, media, and popular culture; themes that he acknowledges have undergone a radical transformation in the past year.

“A reality TV star has just become the 45th President of the United States of America”, he comments, “ in no small part due to his celebrity status and grasp of the media. Celebrity culture can no longer be viewed as harmless entertainment for the masses. It has real, deep and long lasting effects on culture, history, ethics and the populace.”

Alun explores these themes through a series of mediums, including large scale charcoal drawings, sculpture and a striking, gravity defying large scale installation, which had its public debut at  the opening, and is being exhibited for the first time at VANDAL Gallery.

Often humorous, visually striking and wonderfully thought provoking, the show asks the audience to confront the role of celebrity in a post internet, late capitalist, consumer society, and is not to be missed!

You can check it out online, or come and visit us in person from 10am-5pm, Monday - Friday at 16/30 Vine Street, Redfern.
