Corinne Loxton is a Blue Mountains based artist, originally from Cape Town, South Africa. Her love of art making took took her to study at the Canberra School of Art (ANU). But it was when she was a child, spending a lot of time “near mountains and water” that her grandmother “taught [her] to ‘see’ the natural world with the eyes of an artist” and “create things of beauty”.
She draws her inspiration from the natural world. It is Corinne’s place “to be free, to commune, reflect and be re energized”. She is drawn to the Northern Romantic painting tradition and the work of artists such as Turner, Rothko, Richter and Caspar David Friedrich. The practice of Australian artists like Lloyd Rees, Fred Williams and Mandy Martin, to work directly from nature to evoke the essence of the landscape, “inspires [her] to work plein air and explore my unique relationship with place”.
The larger oils that are available on Art Pharmacy tend to be created over several months, and aim to both evoke the experience of being grounded, “or immersed in the landscape”. “Each work needs to have its own voice,” says Corinne.
Corinne Loxton currently practices her art in a bushland studio in the lower Blue Mountains.
