“My BODY of work is
changing, diverse, multi-faceted, multi-tasking,
always all ways ~ flowing towards my desires and loves
the day, week, month, year... the moment!
I am here to say this defiantly, boldly and vulnerably.”
Sydney-based artist Marie Dalliston is a painter who creates works based the emotional attachments she makes with features of the natural world. What begins as an ambiguous attachment is fed by continuing curiosity, from which Marie will decipher a message of preservation or appreciation, and create into an image.
“I generally write down words that describe colours, shapes and feelings of the subject. I like also to write haiku poems to accommodate my landscape paintings… after my written jottings I do a survey of the subject, look up information on the net, do some more sketches and then take photographs to help my recall.”
This is all before any paint is applied to canvas or beechwood panels.
After spending many years working in the family motel business, Marie became a full-time artist and hasn’t looked back since. “I was encouraged to work for the family’s business for most of my life until it was sold and redeveloped in 2004. I did enjoy working in the accommodation, as it was always interesting and gave me a unique insight into people and their ways of living”.
Despite her staggered arrival to practicing art full-time, Marie has participated in well over ten different fine art education programs, exhibited in 14 group shows, held 5 of her own solo shows and accumulated multiple awards.
Marie’s studio space is based in Coogee in the sanctuary of her Garden. She describes it as a peaceful, meditative place where she returns after researching subjects to embark on painting.
