In its most basic sense, a Mandala, or 'circle' is a symbol used in spiritual practice to represent the universe. A mandala can be used as a focus of concentration in meditation, eventually becoming internalised and inducing a sense of calm, and a deeper understanding that form and emptiness are different manifestations of the same infinite flow. I find that the repetition involved in painting mandalas serves the same purpose, and have been told by many people how pleasing and soothing they find the circular forms. This mandala is painted with the colours of dusk in mind, emphasized by the blooming of the night orchids.
