The nautilus is an amazing creature, that has been resident in the sea, unchanged, for over 400 million years. However it is now facing extinction. The lichen is foliose in structure, and is made from algae and/or cyanobacteria, which allows it to photosynthesize. Its presence in the painting is a reminder of the connections between seemingly disparate parts of our natural world.
